The adventure

Spend three days dining, exploring and savouring the peaceful landscape of Maria Island National Park. Enjoy lazy mornings in the quiet Bernacchi heritage house before you choose your activity of the day. Active adventurers can summit the island’s peaks or coastal cliffs with local guides while the more laidback can take it easy with wombat and wallaby spotting or relaxing by the fire. Learn about the island’s penal history as you explore the convict site of Darlington, then return to the mainland after two nights of Tasmanian island hospitality.

Day 1Hobart / Maria IslandWelcome to Tasmania! Your adventure begins in Hobart, or Nipaluna in the language of the Muwinina and Palawa peoples, who are the Traditional Custodians of the land on which Hobart is now located. Prepare to be picked up from your accommodation in Hobart between 7:30am and 7:55am, from where you’ll then be taken to your welcome meeting with your fellow travellers. You’ll then board your transport for a drive to the port at Triabunna and the ferry that will take you over to Maria Island. Keep an eye out for whales and dolphins that are often spotted from the ferry. Arrive on the island and walk up to your accommodation, the historic Bernacchi House, where you’ll sit down for lunch. This afternoon, you have the option to go on a guided walk to the Painted or Fossil Cliffs or simply relax by the fire. Reunite as a group for tonight’s three-course hosted dinner, accompanied by fine local wines and the southern night sky.

Day 2Maria IslandWake up to a hearty breakfast at the Bernacchi House before deciding your plans for the day. Those looking to take it easy can choose between two circuits along a historic route, known for its wildlife spotting. If you’re looking to head further into the wilderness, join your guide for a walk up one of the two summits found on the island. Once at the top, look out over the waters to the Tasmanian mainland and down to the white sand beaches lining the coast. Return mid-afternoon and refresh with a glass of wine and canapes on the front veranda or by the fire. End the day with another gourmet meal made with fresh local Tasmanian produce.
