France

Day 1Day 1: Join NeversThe trip begins in the elegant town of Nevers, nestled in the heart of France and rich in character and history. The barge is moored on the outskirts of town in Embranchement de Nevers, Chemin de Halage. You should arrive at the barge between 2 - 3 PM. When you arrive on board, you can settle in and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. It is also a good moment to become acquainted with the tour leader, skipper and crew and of course your fellow passengers. During dinner aboard the ship, the program for the next day and how the week will work are discussed. Instructions on cycling and safely procedures will also be given and you will be able to take your bike for a test ride after dinner. You may also have the opportunity for an evening walk through the old town of Nevers. The winding medieval streets reveal houses dating back to the 14th–17th centuries, each one with its own story to tell. Nevers’ roots stretch back to Roman times, and since the 5th century it has been the seat of a bishop, giving the town its spiritual and architectural weight. Highlights include the Palais Ducal, a Renaissance-era ducal palace, and several beautifully preserved Romanesque and Gothic churches, including the Cathedral of Saint Cyr and Sainte Julitte.

Day 5Day 5: Cycle through the vineyards of Sancerre (34km/21mi)Today’s ride takes you through one of France’s most celebrated wine regions — Sancerre, world-renowned for its crisp and elegant white wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc. Winegrowing here dates back as far as the 6th century, and while Pinot Noir was once the dominant grape, a devastating 19th-century vine disease led to the rise of Sauvignon — a change that has since defined the region’s global reputation. You’ll cycle a picturesque route through rolling vineyards, charming stone villages and gently winding roads. In Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre, nestled just below the vineyards, you’ll have the chance to taste local wines — a moment to pause and appreciate the land’s deep connection to its produce. After your tasting, enjoy a relaxed return ride through the vines, where every turn offers views as rewarding as the wines themselves, before arriving back to the Clair de Lune.
