Day 3Day 3: Continue via Predjama Castle to Postojna (43km/27mi)Today’s ride takes you away from the main tourist routes and into the quieter landscapes of rural Slovenia, following scenic backroads through forests, limestone terrain and small villages. Along the way, you may wish to take a short detour to the dramatic Predjama Castle, one of the country’s most remarkable landmarks, built directly into a cave mouth halfway up a 123m / 404ft cliff face. The castle is closely tied to the legend of the rebellious knight Erasmus of Predjama, who is said to have withstood a lengthy siege by secretly accessing supplies through the hidden cave network behind the fortress. According to local folklore, he even taunted his enemies by tossing fresh cherries down from the castle walls. A visit to the castle offers a fascinating insight into medieval life, regional legends and the unusual circumstances surrounding Erasmus’ eventual downfall. +760m /2493ft, -510m/1673ft
